10 Things You Didn’t Know about WVU Football

West Virginia University knows how to play football, there’s no doubt about that. Over the years, they’ve had several different coaches and they’ve even played in a number of different conferences, currently playing in the Big 12. They’re not a team that stands out as a contender for a national championship year after year, but they do stand out in many other ways. If you want to know more, keep reading. Here’s a list of 10 things you might not know about WVU Football:

1. They rank 14th out of all college teams that play bowl games

Overall, they rank 14th when it comes to wins for a college football team. That’s definitely nothing to sneeze at. When you consider that there are so many teams out there competing, ranking in the top 15 is a goal that everyone has but less than half of the teams playing are capable of achieving it. It’s definitely something to be proud of.

2. They actually have the highest ranking of any college team without a national championship

As a matter of fact, they have the highest ranking of any college football team that has never won a national championship. That may seem like a big black eye, but it really puts them in a unique position. It gives them something to work for and it provides them with a distinction that says that they are competitive, national championship or not.

3. They’ve been playing since the late 1800s

They’ve been playing football for a very long time. Their first season was in 1890 and they’ve been playing consecutively ever since. Granted, things were a lot different back then but that’s true for any team that has such a long and storied history. In fact, one of the reasons that so many people are interested in playing football for the university is because of that history.

4. They have one season where they were never beaten

It took them a while to find their stride, to be sure but eventually they did exactly that. In 1922, the team went undefeated, winning every single game they had that year. While they’ve never really recaptured the success of that particular season, they have definitely had many other successful seasons.

5. When they first started, they used to play in a cow pasture

When the team first started playing in 1890, they didn’t have fancy stadiums. As a matter of fact, they didn’t even have fields that were dedicated for football. This team played in an old cow pasture with very few, if any, upgrades. Aside from moving the cattle off the field, they basically played on that field just as it was and they made it work. Several teams that were playing during this particular era faced similar challenges. It wasn’t until much later that colleges started building dedicated fields and stadiums.

6. Their current stadium wasn’t built until 1980

As a matter of fact, the current stadium where they’re playing now wasn’t built until 1980. By virtually all standards, that stadium is now outdated. After all, it has been there for almost four decades now and many people are pushing for it to either be upgraded or for an entirely new stadium to be built. As far as the team itself is concerned, they seem perfectly happy playing right where they are.

7. It took them 30 years to have a successful season

You might say that they know the meaning of perseverance. It was previously mentioned that it took them a while to find their stride. In truth, it took approximately 30 years for them to finally find the success they were looking for in football. Remember, they started playing in 1990. It wasn’t until the early 1920s that they finally had a successful season.

8. Some of their players became legends

One of the people that played for their team was Sam Huff, who played in the 1950s. He had so much success that he not only became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, but went on to play in the NFL and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well.

9. They have 15 conference championships

While they have never won a national championship they do have a number of conference championships that they can enjoy. As a matter of fact, they have won that title no less than 15 times. Clearly, the team knows how to be competitive. It just so happens that they also play in a very competitive conference that demands they play at their very best week after week.

10. They have played in almost 40 bowl games, winning just under half of them

Playing in 40 bowl games should be considered an honor in and of itself. They’ve almost hit this magical number but more importantly, they’ve won about 15 of those games. Again, it shows that the team is capable of being competitive year after year.
