Don’t let the title fool you; NASA is really working to make their way further into the galaxy to explore these planets that haven’t been able to get as much attention as the rest. It has been announced that NASA is indeed in the works to set up missions to probe around the planets of both Uranus and Neptune in the future to learn more about our Solar System and how these planets tie in with the rest. What We Want To Learn
Obviously, we have made many missions to space in the past several decades, and have been able to learn much about the planets that surround Earth. NASA has made great strides when it comes to learning about planets such as Mars, Jupiter, and even Saturn, with technology orbiting around and even landing on the surface of these planets for many years now. Finally, missions are being introduced to teach us more about the planets farthest out of our reach, Neptune and Uranus. In short, NASA wants to be able to find out what exactly makes up these planets, studying the various weather and climate elements that occur, and as we said before, how they fit into our Solar System.
What The Missions Will Look Like
As of now, NASA is not set to conduct these missions to Uranus and Neptune anytime soon. There is still much funding, scheduling, and research that needs to be completed before the finalizations can take place. So far, it has been decided that the missions themselves will include both flybys as well as launching an orbiter. This orbiter would then send out an atmospheric probe of sorts that will help to get samples of the gasses that lurk on Uranus along with any other elements. As of now, the projected missions for Uranus will not take place until somewhere between 2030 to 2036, while the missions to Neptune are proposed to take place either before 2030 or after 2040. This is caused by the need for a gravity boost to the planet which would take place around Jupiter and would need to be timed accurately.
Although it seems hilarious to us bystanders that NASA is ready to start probing Uranus for gasses, it is honestly a huge moment when it comes to exploring this unknown frontier. These missions will allow us to find out more about this vast universe that we live in, and what our Solar System is truly made up of all the while. Even if these missions are still in the early stages of being worked out and planned, we are still excited to see what the future will hold, and what we will learn from venturing further to these new horizons.
