Live According to the Serenity Prayer: Don’t Just Read It

Dear Boys,

This isn’t the entire serenity prayer but this is the part that most people in the world are familiar with:  God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

In all walks of life people try to ascribe to this prayer.  For the most part it’s used in things like self help, addiction, or anything else where the mind wanders, is out of control and tries its best to control things in life.  The point is that we spend way too much time worrying about what we cannot control.  In fact many of us (including me) worry almost MORE about the things that haven’t happened or might happen rather than focusing on the here and now.

There’s nothing wrong with focusing on the future or deriving a plan from the past.  However, the biggest waste of energy in your lives will likely be thinking about things that you have absolutely no control over.  In one way or another you’ll be guilty of this multiple times.  The brain just can’t help it.  You might project what you think a person thinks about you.  You might worry that you’ll get into a car accident.  You might worry that the sky is falling.  You’ll worry that the lump in your neck is cancer.  It doesn’t matter what the worry is.  What matters is you have zero control over the outcome and that lack of control is what fucks all of us up numerous times.

Hell your old man faces this shit every single day.  It’s a part of life.  But boy oh boy I wish I could master this prayer.  If only in life I never worried about the things I couldn’t control I’d likely be in a state of bliss whether my life was in the shitter or things were going really well.

Unfortunately I cannot tell you how to live this way.  I have zero instruction or tips on it.  I just know that it’s the absolute best way to live.
