Christian McCaffrey is a running back and returns specialist for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers. Having played his college football at Stanford, he was drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft with the Panthers eight overall pick. When he was a sophomore in college, he was named the College Football Player of the Year by the Associated Press. That same year, he was the runner-up for the prestigious Heisman Trophy. He currently holds the record for the most all-purpose yards gained in one single season in the NCAA. Beyond all of this, Christian McCaffrey wants to also be known for what he does away from the sport that he loves. Here are five amazing things that he has done off the football field that you should be interested in.
1.Taking Care of Army Vets
The Panthers might not have made it to the Super Bowl in 2019, or even the playoffs for that matter, but that did not stop Christian McCaffrey from doing what he could to support the work of service members around the world. He partnered with both USAA and the Wounded Warriors Project in order to allow two decorated Army veterans to see the Super Bowl in Atlanta on February 3rd. McCaffrey announced the fact that former Army Sergeant Alex Somerson and his wife would be able to make it to the game. Somerson served two tours in Iraq and was also awarded the Combat Infantry Badge for his service. McCaffrey wanted to make this gesture, which he announced on Twitter, as his way of showing his support for the troops. McCaffrey was also at the Super Bowl and had the opportunity to meet Somerson and his wife prior to kickoff in the Salute to Service Lounge sponsored by USAA.
2. Taking Care of the Offensive Line
McCaffrey might be relatively young to the NFL, but he has already learned that it is important to take care of those who protect you on the field. For Christmas, he had a large Big Green Egg basket specially delivered right to the locker of every offensive lineman that the Panthers have. This big egg is actually a 162 pound grill. It is able to cook up to a 20 pound turkey, 12 hamburgers, six chickens cooked vertically, eight good sized steaks, or an impressive seven racks of ribs – again, cooked vertically. That is a lot of meat, and the offensive linemen each expressed their appreciation, with many of them saying that it demonstrates how good of a guy McCaffrey is both on and off the football field.
3. Getting Into the Acting Business
It seems that every elite athlete these days has begun to endorse products from just about every industry imaginable. Many of those shy away from the television screen, but not McCaffrey. Even as a young player, he has begun to star in numerous commercials. This started in 2018 when he appeared in a commercial made specifically for the NFL. This had him making an appearance with other players such as Jay Ajayi, Todd Gurley, and DeAndre Hopkins. Who knows, that might just lead to more appearances for him on the screen in the future.
4. Quite the Piano Player
While it is true that Christian McCaffrey has played sports pretty much his entire life, that does not mean that he has ignored other more artistic pursuits. In fact, he is quite the piano player. While he might not have much time during the football season, seeing as how is busy running and catching balls, he still says he finds ample time in the offseason to play some music.
5. Missions Are a Way of Life
McCaffrey is an evangelical Christian and is rather devout. He even spent part of his summer back in 2013 in Rwanda on a church mission. He does not have time to devote to taking regular trips any longer, but he still makes his faith known in other ways, both on the field and off.
Christian McCaffrey demonstrates that there is nothing wrong with loving sports. He has devoted his life to becoming the best running back and wide receiver combination in football. At the same time, he wants to be known as being much more well rounded than that. He strives to be the best person he can be, to be actively involved in the community, and to make a difference in the world.
