You can most certainly argue about whether or not he’s the best player in the world right now, but there’s no debating the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo is the most famous soccer player alive. Countless people love him, while just as many (if not more) hate him, but everyone’s heard his name. In fact, Cristiano Ronaldo is so well-known that even non-soccer fans know who he is, due to his incredible wealth, playboy lifestyle, and model-esque looks. However, despite the fact that Ronaldo is the most popular soccer player in the world, there are still some facts about him that might surprise you. Here are five things you didn’t know about Cristiano Ronaldo.
He’s a car collector.
When he’s not on the soccer pitch, Cristiano keep himself busy with many different hobbies and activities. One of them – car collecting. Ronaldo is a huge car fanatic and has used a good chunk of the money that he’s made in order to purchase a number of different rare and high-end vehicles. It is reported that Ronaldo owns an Audi R8 Coupé, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, Ferrari F430, a customized Bugatti Veyron, Porsche Cayenne turbo, Bentley Continental GT convertible, Audi Q7, Audi RS6, Aston Martin DB9, BMW M6, and Ferrari F350 spider. It may not be Jay Leno’s car collection, but I’d say Ronaldo’s not doing too shabby.
He is a father.
Just days after Portugal was knocked out of the 2010 World Cup (as they now face the possibility of elimination again this year unless they can beat Ghana), Ronaldo took to social media and publicly announced that he was now a father. It was revealed that he had a son named Cristiano Ronaldo Jr., but the name of the boy’s mother was never given. This was a part of an agreement that Ronaldo made with the mother of the child, that her identity would remain private and that the boy would be under Ronaldo’s custody. Perhaps fatherhood has also a stabilizing effect on Ronaldo’s romantic relationships as well, putting an end to his womanizing ways. Reportedly, Ronaldo has been dating Russian model Irina Shayk since 2010, and the couple still remains together.
He almost didn’t end up playing soccer because of his health.
When he was just a teenager, Ronaldo found something out that could have altered the course of his life forecer. At just 15, he discovered that he was had a medical issue with his heart that could have forced him to quit playing soccer all together. Just imagine – the soccer world without Cristiano Ronaldo. Fortunately, however, Ronaldo had his heart operated on. After a minor surgery that fixed the problem, it was only a couple of days before Ronaldo was back playing the game he loves.
He didn’t choose number 7 – it chose him.
Ronaldo actually wanted the number 28 when he came to play for Manchester United back in 2003. However, coach Alex Ferguson insisted that he wear number 7 because of its history. That jersey had been worn by team legends George Best and Eric Cantona, and Ferguson believed that Ronaldo would be that talented of a player as well. “After I joined, the manager asked me what number I would like,” Ronaldo has stated before. “I said 28. But Ferguson said ‘No, you’re going to have No. 7,’ and the famous shirt was an extra source of motivation. I was forced to live up to such an honor.” And I’d sure say he has.
He doesn’t drink alcohol.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s father was an alcoholic and passed away from liver condition brought about his alcoholism in 2005. Ronaldo’s father was only 52, and Ronlado, himself, was only 20 years old. Since his father’s death, Ronaldo has stated that he does not drink alcohol and actually won a lawsuit against a magazine that tried to publish that he was drinking heavily at a club. Many may find this fact surprising given Ronaldo’s playboy reputation, but it appears that his only vice is woman themselves – no drugs or booze.
