Five Sports Coaches Who have Been Traded

2. Bill Parcells. From the New England Patriots to the New York Jets, 1997

It’s rare to see two bitter rivals conduct business together, but that was the case back in 1997 when the New York Jets acquired Bill Parcells from their divisional foe New England Patriots as head coach. After a few hoops to jump through in order to get the deal done, “The Big Tuna” was let go of his contract in New England—where he had led the team to the Super Bowl just a year prior—and brought along his assistant coach, Bill Belichick. All the Jets had to give up for two future Hall of Fame coaches were third- and fourth-round picks in ’97, a second-round pick in ’98 and a first-round pick in ’99, while also randomly contributing $300,000 to a Patriots charity.
