Ten Hits with Song Meanings You Never Expected

“Like a Virgin”/”Material Girl” – Madonna

Despite popular belief, “Like a Virgin” isn’t about a sweet, sensitive girl, and it’s not even about a girl at all, actually. The song is about lyricist Billy Steniberg’s own life, how he went through an incredibly difficult relationship in the past but felt refreshed and better the next time he fell in love with someone. It was as if he had been reborn – as if he was like a virgin. Steinberg states, “I was saying…I’ve been battered romantically and emotionally like many people – but I’m starting a new relationship and it just feels so good, it’s healing all the wounds and making me feel like I’ve never done this before.”
