Spain’s David Villa Breaks Down in Tears After Leaving His Final World Cup Match

David Villa

After being subbed out for in yesterday’s match between Spain and Australia, which meant he was leaving his final World Cup match ever, Spain’s David Villa broke down in tears on the team’s bench. Villa has played for Spain the 2006, 2010, and now 2014 World Cups, but he announced prior to this year’s event, that he would retire from international play after the World Cup had concluded.

As far as last appearances go, it was a pretty darn good one for David Villa. He scored a goal for Spain early in the match, in the 36th minute, and helped lead them to a 3-0 victory over Australia. Villa was substituted out of the game around the 56th minute, which is when he became emotional as he jogged over to and sat on the team’s bench.

Even though Spain had already been eliminated from the World Cup, thus making their final match against Australia technically not matter, the game still provided a great swan song for David Villa. His goal in the match was the ninth World Cup goal of his career and his 59th goal playing for Spain overall. He retires from international play as Spain’s top scorer of all time

Currently on loan from New York, Villa will  be Melbourne’s City striker this upcoming season in the Australian A-League before making his MLS debut with the newly formed New York City, who plan to be fully ready for the 2015 season. It’s unclear how much longer, Villa, who will be 33 at the end of this year, intends on playing. However, if he has anywhere near the type of success that he had with Spain while he’s playing for New York, MLS teams better watch out.
