While Phil Mickelson may have made the best overall shot so far at the Scottish Open, there should be no argument that Rory McIlrory had the best drive. Yesterday, on the 13th hole, which is a 436 yard Par 4, McIlroy hit a 436 yard drive right onto the green, making it look as if it was no big deal at all. That’s a drive that’s almost 100 yards more than your typical “bomb” of a drive in golf.
Rory McIlroy’s drive was 39 yards longer than the longest drive on the PGA Tour all year. Plus, it was 55 yards longer than any drive McIlroy has hit this season on the PGA Tour (his longest before this mammoth of a shot was a 381 drive).
After the drive, McIlroy then two-putted for a birdie on the 13th hole. Overall, during the first round of the Scottish Open on Thursday, McIlroy shot a fantastic 7-under 64. That’s a new course record at Royal Aberdeen and a good enough performance to make McIlroy the leader on the first day of play.
Honestly, I’m not a huge golf guy, but after watching video of Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy, I’m highly considering watching the rest of the Scottish Open this weekend if I can. If the rest of the tournament can be this exciting (which I never thought golf could really be, and I say this as someone who played golf, although not very well, for years), then it’ll definitely be worth the watch.
