The Most Popular Songs About New York

John Varvatos Presents Transformer By Lou Reed And Mick Rock

“Walk on the Wild Side” – Lou Reed

After two more recent songs, I had to pause and take a step back to 1972 to talk about Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” The song focuses on the journeys of several different individuals as they make their way to New York. These people that Reed sings about are reportedly references to Andy Warhol’s “superstars,” the people that he fixated on and promoted during the 1960s and 1970s. If that’s the case, “Walk on the Wild Side” isn’t so much a song about the possible temptations that await you in the city but it’s a chronicle of  the more mischievous behavior of those who were a part of the New York City art scene at the time.
