Jim Harbaugh is a lot things. A father of six children. A former NFL player who played on five different teams during his career. Head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, one of the best teams in all of football. And now Jim Harbaugh is also a comedian, as he and his wife, Sarah, provide lots of laughs in a new advertisement from Dockers warning you about the dangers of wearing “Dad Pants.”
The ad mainly focuses on Sarah Harbaugh’s impassioned plea to help with this “serious condition that is affecting countless men in our country.” She’s talking, of course, about “Dad Pants,” which are “the shapeless, pleated tragedy that too many men find themselves in every day.”
Although Jim Harbaugh doesn’t speak in the commercial, he’s still pretty hilarious when he gets the chance to be on screen. My favorite moment in the whole video is when he’s put on his new pair of Dockers and is standing in the backyard, grilling. Sarah and their daughter walk up to him, and their daughter asks, “Mommy who is that?” Sarah proudly responds, “That’s your dad,” and Harbaugh just turns to the screen and cheesily grins.
I’m always a fan of people in sports, whether it’s players, coaches, or other sports personalities, giving something outside their comfort zone a shot, especially when it comes to comedy. I still remember when Ryan Howard and Chase Utley guest starred on an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and it was easily one of the best things that either them had ever done. It’s just nice to know that, when it’s not game day, these guys can joke around and make fun of themselves. I’ve always liked Jim Harbaugh, but now that I know he doesn’t take himself too seriously, I like him even more.
