Giancarlo Stanton’s Home Run Makes Andrew McCutchen’s Jaw Drop

Andrew McCutchen

If you watched the Home Run Derby last night (after about an hour long rain delay), you know the type of performance that the Miami Marlin’s Giancarlo Stanton put on. Even though Yoenis Cespedes ended winning the whole competition, Stanton hit some of the farthest home runs of the night last night during the derby, and one in particular made Andrew McCutchen’s jaw drop. I think you know the one I’m talking about, and if you don’t, there’s a video below and it’s a pretty great watch.

This video, this moment really, represents why I still love the Home Run Derby and what it stands for, even if baseball has found itself mucked up in recent years with steroid scandal after steroid scandal. While I understand people’s complaints about how we shouldn’t be glorifying power hitters who used performance enhancing drugs, I would argue right back at them that the Home Run Derby doesn’t do that. Instead, I would say that the Home Run Derby as a whole, encapsulated in this moment right here between Giancarlo Stanton and Andrew McCutchen, is about the sheer joy of baseball, about being a little kid, playing in the backyard with your friends, where the coolest thing in the world was when one of you would hit a long ball so far that you could barely see where it ended up landing.

Check out the video of the homer (and a .gif of Andrew McCutchen’s reaction) for yourself below if you haven’t already seen it. Hopefully we can get more moments as fun as this during tonight’s All-Star Game.
