Five Adjectives That Are Too Often Over Embellished

"Broken Heroes" Exhibition

Is it me or is there a growing trend in this country to use words that mean way more than they should be used for?  Put it this way, when someone sees a movie that has one funny line and says “Best. Movie. Ever,” I mean come on dude.  Is Leprechaun 2 really better than Citizen Kane?

And I’m not saying that I’m not guilty of this.  I think we all are.  We’ve all used the coveted LOL in emails and text conversations at least once. Were we really laughing out loud the whole time?  If certain people I knew laughed out loud every time they typed that acronym there’s no way they’d be able to function.  Their stomachs would easily explode from all the laughter. In my opinion, there are 5 particular words that I think are too often inappropriately used.

Real Definition: arousing great merriment; extremely funny.

I don’t like how this word is thrown around all the time.  Just the other day I got an email from a person who pointed me to some video telling me it was “hilarious.”  Really?  Was it really that funny?  I feel like the slightest chuckle out of a person is going to elicit a “this is hilarious” response these days.  Not everything is hilarious man.  In fact, most things aren’t.

Real Defintion: causing or worthy of ridicule or derision; absurd; preposterous; laughable.

“Dude you have to see this guy, he’s ridiculous.”  “Check out this girl’s tush, it’s ridiculous.” I’m actually a big fan of using this word when it’s used to describe something that is quite attention grabbing.  But worthy of ridicule?  Laughable?  The literal definition carries way more to it than the ways we throw it around.

Real Definition: utterly or obviously senseless, illogical, or untrue; contrary to all reason or common sense; laughably foolish or false

Since when is anything utterly or obviously senseless?  Apparently most things are.  Like this site.  It’s definitely absurd.  But what if someone actually did use that word to describe this site?  I mean is it really laughably foolish or contrary to all reason?  Hardly.   Seeing a guy floating in mid air, that’s absurd.

Real Definition:  not sane; not of sound mind; mentally deranged and:  of, pertaining to, or characteristic of a person who is mentally deranged.

“Yo man, that party was insane.”  “This guy is insanely good.”  No one or thing is so good that they are not of sound mind.  No person is so great at something that their skills are similar to that of a mentally deranged person.  Insane?  A guy walking around in armor in the middle of the street for no reason, that’s insane.  A guy who craps on the ground in broad daylight?  That’s insane.

Real Definition: too dubious or improbable to be believed and:  so remarkable as to strain credulity; extraordinary

I’m out of descriptions, you guys get my drift.
