Christopher Walken to Play Captain Hook in NBC’s Peter Pan

Premiere Of CBS Films' "Seven Psychopaths" - Arrivals

NBC has found a pretty inspired choice for Captain Hook in their live musical presentation of Peter Pan. My only question is: will the Captain want more cowbell? The infamous Christopher Walken has been cast to play Captain Hook in NBC’s Peter Pan, which is set to air December 4th of this year.

“He’s one of the most unique actors in our business,” NBC Internment chairman Bob Greenblatt said, when the announcement was made yesterday at the Television Critics’ Association summer press tour. “He might really just be a song and dance man at heart. … This might be the first tap dancing Captain Hook you’ve ever seen.”

NBC’s decision to recruit Christopher Walken and other actors for this new live performance of Peter Pan comes after the success of the network’s production of The Sound of Music last year, which featured country star Carrie Underwood in the lead role of Maria. For Peter Pan, Greenblatt said that they had their eyes on another blonde performer: Frozen‘s Kristen Bell to play the role of Peter. However, Bell was unable to take the role due to scheduling conflicts with her series regular role on Showtime’s House of Lies.

“We were talking about doing it with a man at one point, but we’ve had several women who wanted to do it and they’re either busy or their schedules don’t work,” Greenblatt said. “It’s not like we can film this at any time; I need this person from Aug. 5-Dec. 5, so that knocks out the Kristen Bells of the world, who was somebody I talked to about doing it and she was interested but she’s doing House of Lies. It’s tricky finding the right person in the schedule that we need it but we’re actually close. [Peter is] going to be female.”

This actually isn’t the first time that NBC has staged a live production of  Peter Pan.  The network did it back in 1955, just a year after the first Broadway production of Peter Pan opened in 1954.  And no matter who they end up casting as Peter, I know I’ll tune in. The pure hilarity of Christopher Walken as Captain Hook – it can’t get much better than that.
