Carmelo Anthony Will Opt Out of His Contract With the Knicks to Become a Free Agent

Take Flight Media Event 2013

We’ve reported to you in the recent weeks that there has been much speculation that Carmelo Anthony may enter free agency and that he may actually end up with the Miami Heat. Well, now it’s official apparently. According to an anonymous source reporting to the USA Today, Carmelo Anthony will opt out of his contract with the New York Knicks to become a free agent on July 1.

Anthony was set to make $23.3 million next season. He will have numerous teams trying to sign him – the most likely candidates being the Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, and the Knicks, of course. Free agents cannot be officially singed until July 10, even though teams can begin talking to them starting on July 1.

Anthony has never been a free agent since the Denver Nuggets drafted him No. 3 in the 2003 draft. He signed a rookie extension with the Nuggets in 2006 and another three-year extension when the Nuggets traded him to the Knicks in 2011.

This will definitely be one of the biggest decisions of Anthony’s career, and it will be interesting to see if he will attempt to make more money or put himself in a better position to win. The Knicks have been a disappointment to fans over the past couple of seasons, not advancing past the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals throughout the duration of Anthony’s time in New York and not even making the playoffs this past season.

Anthony has gone on record saying that he wants to win an NBA championship more than anything else. If that really is the case, New York may not be the best place for him anymore.
