Anthony Rizzo Likes to Swing at Pitches That Hit Him

Anthony Rizzo

I understand that hitters can get fooled by pitches, especially really nasty breaking balls from certain pitchers (those can make just about any player standing up at the plate look stupid). However, as I was watching video of Anthony Rizzo hitting, I couldn’t find an excuse for why he was swinging at the pitches he was swinging at. Apparently, Anthony Rizzo likes to swing at balls that are inside. Like really, really inside.  Like so inside they hit him.

As you can see in the video below, I’m not making this up. Rizzo isn’t just swinging at bad pitches that are in the dirt or getting jammed on some high, inside fast balls – he’s actually swinging at a pitch that hits him. And this isn’t an isolated incident. If you look online, you can find multiple instances through different videos and gifs of Rizzo swinging at these types of pitches. It would be hilarious, if it wasn’t so sad.

I’m not sure what the Chicago Cubs hitting coach does to help his players out on a day-to-day basis, but if I were him, I’d make Anthony Rizzo a special project of mine. For the sake of your team’s offense (and, really, for the sake of Rizzo’s dignity), something needs to be done about at his pitch selections when he’s up at bat. Maybe in batting practice, they can try to train him to only swing at pitches on the outer half of the plate so that he’ll learn to drive them the opposite way? I’m honestly not sure. I feel bad for the guy, but if Rizzo keeps this up, there’ll be no way to defend hem – he’d simply be a lost cause.
