Tetris Creator Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary, Still Plays Game Every Week

The Labour Party Hold Their Annual Party Conference

While there are people out there who may do some weird things when it comes to Tetris, the majority of us just know it as the most iconic strategy game of all time. It was this day, June 6th, back in 1984, when Tetris was released, which means that today is the game’s 30th anniversary.

In a statement sent to media today from The Tetris Company agent Blue Planet Software, creator Alexey Pajitnov says, “I never imagined Tetris was going to be this successful.” And Tetris really has been quite successful. To date, the company has seen more than 425 million paid downloads for the game on mobile devices.

“The simple, yet addicting nature of Tetris still has me playing it a few times every week,” Pajitnov said. “I meet fans from around the world who are also as passionate about Tetris as me, and there is no doubt in my mind Tetris will continue to expand and bring its classic appeal to new players in new ways and on new devices, whatever they may be.”

While reflecting on the past, Blue Planet Software is also looking towards the future. The company wants to bring Tetris to more video gaming platforms over the next 30 years. Ubisoft just this week announced Tetris Ultimate for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, while more Tetris games will also be coming to iPhones, Androids, Facebook, and even Amazon Fire TV. Additionally, the costume company Rosta Imposta is planning a line of Tetris-themed Halloween costumes, and Tetris-themed robes, slippers, towels, socks, and even footwear are also in the works through retail company Robe Factory.

“Our theme for the 30th Anniversary of Tetris is ‘We All Fit Together.’ It speaks to how Tetris transcends cultures and language, and will continue to be fun for anyone, anywhere to play for generations to come,” Blue Planet CEO Maya Rogers said. “We all have an inherent desire to create order out of chaos–whether in playing a game or packing the trunk of your car. No matter where the game is played or brand is celebrated, there will always be Tetris.”
