Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Competitive Eating Competitions

Champions Compete In Nathan's Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest

Competitive eating is an actual sport

This may be very surprising to some, but competitive eating is a real sport. There are two leagues, the Federation of Competitive Eaters (also known as Major League Eating) and the Association of Independent Competitive Eaters, that hold competitive eating competitions annually, and they actually have different rules. For example, AICE competitions are “picnic style,” meaning that the food must be eaten in its original state, with no mashing or soaking in waster. The IFOCE, on the other hand, permits to dunk their food in water or smash it up before eating it.
