ISIS Invites Lionel Messi to Join Their Cause Over Twitter

FC Barcelona Visit The West Bank And Israel

Here are two news items I never saw colliding: ISIS and the World Cup. Apparently, after Lionel Messi scored a goal in last week’s World Cup match between Argentina and Iraq, leading Argentina to win the game 1-0, the terrorist organization, known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) took to Twitter to congratulate Lionel Messi on his goal and to ask him to their be a part of their cause.

Here’s the picture of the tweet that ISIS sent out on June 22nd (the game between Argentina and Iran took place on June 21st). In it, ISIS praises Lionel Messi on scoring his goal and encourage him to “join the the jihadist call.”

ISIS Twitter

This is what the tweet translates to in English: “ISIS congratulates Messi and invites him to join the jihadist call and awards him the title of the Argentinian father of goals and the King of South America.” The terrorist group also apparently used the hashtag #Iran_Argentina, which might seem surprising but shouldn’t be since ISIS supporters have taken to Twitter and been using the #WorldCup2014 hashtag to more publicly show their pride about the amount of success ISIS is having in Iraq. Over this past month, ISIS has sized control of a large portion of Iraq, and their even reports out now that the organization may attempt to move into Baghdad soon.

Even though Iran suffered a loss to Argentina, the soccer team still has a chance of advancing to the second round of the World Cup for the first time in history. Iran plays Bosnia, who has already been eliminated, tonight.
