I never thought television and food (two of my favorite things) would ever find a way of combining together. But then there was the Subway sandwich campaign to save Chuck a few years ago and after that, Game of Thrones beer came out, and now we have new Saturday Night Live-themed ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s. That’s right - SNL now has its own ice cream.
In fact, SNL has not even been limited to its own singular flavor. Two distinct flavors have spawned from two of the comedy show’s own sketches.
The first flavor, Lazy Sunday, comes from the sketch of the same name, which both Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell starred in, as the two men professed their love for cupcakes. Therefore, Lazy Sunday has both chocolate and yellow cupcake pieces in it and also has a vanilla cake batter base with a “chocolate frosting swirl. The other new flavor, Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch, named after Kristen Wiig’s famous SNL character, is a mix of chocolate and sweet cream ice cream filled with caramel clusters, fudge-covered almonds, and a marshmallow swirl.
Ben and Jerry’s also has plans to create two more SNL-inspired flavors this year to celebrate the show’s 40th anniversary. All of these SNL flavors will only be sold at Ben and Jerry’s scoop shops and will not be available for purchase in grocery stores or supermarkets.
Creating flavors from films or television shows is nothing new for Ben Jerry’s. The ice cream company created flavors for both Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon a couple years ago, and just recently released a Ron Burgundy butterscotch-flavored Scotchy, Scotch, Scotch ice cream when Anchorman 2 hit theaters.
