Ten Hits with Song Meanings You Never Expected

“In the Air Tonight”—Phil Collins

The myth surrounding “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins was that the song was written after Collins watched a man, who was close enough to help, let another man drown in the water. (Collins, apparently, according to the story, was watching from such a distance that he was too far away to help.) After witnessing this, Collins supposedly used “In the Air Tonight” as a way to call out the person for the crime that they had committed. However, this story seems to be false. Collins has denied and states that the song is actually about the again and frustration he experienced while going through his divorce.
