Teen With Special Needs Receives Prom Proposal With a Little Help From RGIII

RGIII

Now these are the types of stories that I love to write about. Washington Redskins quarterback, Robert Griffin III, more commonly known as RGIII, was instrumental in making sure that a high school student with special needs received the perfect prom proposal last Thursday at Centreville High School in Virginia.

Morgan Assel, a student at Centreville, contacted RGIII to help her ask her friend, Juwaan Espinal, who suffers from cerebral palsy, to prom. RGIII is Espinal’s favorite NFL player.

The “promposal” took place on the field of Centreville High School. Assel walk towards Espinal with giant banner that read, “I know I’m not as cool as RGIII but will you go to prom with me?” Then, immediately after, RGIII himself came out from behind the sign, causing Espinal, who is, for the most part, non-verbal due to his condition, to become ecstatic, grinning from ear to ear. His answer was clearly a resounding “yes.”

“You can tell he’s filled with life,” RGIII said to news reporters about Espinal after the proposal was complete.  “We [professional athletes] make time in our schedules for stuff like this because it’s so worth it.”

Assel had tears of joy after seeing how well everything came together for her friend. “I’m just really excited and really grateful that RGIII came to help Juwaan,” she said. “It just means a lot that people are willing to do this for him, because he’s such a special person and he really deserves it.”

These truly are the best kinds of stories because not only do they show the kindness and compassion of professional athletes and celebrities like RGIII, but more importantly, they show the love and care that so many individuals, like Assel, had for their friends or family members who are individuals with special needs. Watch the video below and see Espinal’s infectious smile. Trust me, you won’t be able to only watch it once.
