1947 – Mt. Rainier, Washington

On June 24, 1947, aviator Kenneth Arnold was flying his plane near Mt. Rainier, Washington when he saw nine UFOs flying at him in a single formation. Arnold said that the unidentified aircrafts were flat and shaped similarly to pie plates, while having a “sort of convex triangle in the rear.” His initial description was soon turned into the catchier “flying saucer” that we are all familiar with. Even though the U.S. Air Force attempted to write off Arnold’s claims as simply an optical illusion, he spoke publicly about what he saw again in 1977 and gave specific details about the objects, such as the speed at which they were flying: 1,700 miles per hour.
