Sean Astin Thinks The Goonies 2 Will Be As Good As the First One

Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Emerge At NY Comic Con 2012 - Day 2

Sean Astin took to Reddit the other day for an AMA where he promoted a documentary entitled Sultana, which is about “the greatest U.S. maritime disaster you’ve never heard of. ”  He answered numerous fans’ questions about The Goonies, specifically what his thoughts are about The Goonies 2 being a real possibility.

News first broke about The Gonnies 2 being “in the works” back in April, but not much is really known about the film. Director Richard Donner (who directed the original The Goonies and other classic films like Superman 2 and the Lethal Weapon movies) has stated that Steven Spielberg, who was a producer on The Goonies back in 1985, has come up with the story for the sequel.

It’s Astin’s confidence in both Donner and Spielberg that lead him to express optimism during the Reddit Ask Me Anything when he was asked about The Goonies 2. Astin told Redditors that “The first one was magic. The second one will be too, or Steven and Dick won’t do it.”

Astin’s faith in Spielberg and Donner has me a little more open-minded about a second Goonies film. The original The Goonies, along with The Sandlot and Little Giants, was the defining film of my childhood, so I’m a little overprotective of it, especially after the monstrosity that was The Sandlot 2, a movie that I refuse to watch and continually neglect to acknowledge its existence.

Here’s hoping that Spielberg won’t “nuke the fridge” when it comes The Goonies 2 and that he’s learned this most important lesson from his good pal George Lucas: give the fans what they loved about the originals in a new way, and don’t try to fix something that’s not broken.
