Steve Perry Sings Onstage for the First Time in Nearly 20 Years

City Of Hope Spirit Of Life Gala Honoring Rob Light

Journey’s Steve Perry is probably one of the most well-known lead singers in history, but for about the  past 20 years he hasn’t performed with Journey or even as a solo act. However, on Sunday night, Perry sang onstage for the first time since 1995, as he joined the indie-rock band, the Eels, during their show in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Perry first came on stage to help the Eels perform one of their cult hits for fans, but soon followed that initial song with two Journey classics, “Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” which, in a great moment, the crowd loudly sang along with Perry.

Perry’s voice sounds like it hasn’t lost any of its quality in the almost twenty years since we’ve last heard it live. Despite his numerous well-documented health problems (ongoing arthritis, a hip-replacement surgery in 1998, two melanoma-removal surgeries in 2013), Perry, who is now 65, seemed to be back at home on the stage and received such a great reception that it caused the Eels lead singer, Mark Everett, to joke, “”They don’t applaud like that for me! I guess I gotta disappear for 25 years!”

As a huge Journey and Steve Perry fan, seeing him on stage again is all kinds of amazing in its own right. However, selfishly, it makes me hope that this isn’t a one-and-done thing for Perry, and that, at some point in the near future, he’ll get back together with his buddies from Journey or at least go out for a small solo tour on his own. Until I hear otherwise, I won’t stop believin’ (oh yeah, I couldn’t resist that joke, no matter how corny it is). Check out the video of Perry performing below.
