Although nobody is actually excited about the Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi this year, the fact is that they’re going on as planned—no matter how undeveloped, unprepared and criticized they are.

Just like every Olympics—both winter and summer—there will undoubtedly be a few athletes who emerge as stars—and these are our picks to do just that.

5. Ashley Wagner – American Figure Skater

After failing to qualify for the Winter Olympics back in Vancouver, 2010, could the redemption story of Ashley Wagner be one that fans really rally behind?

If she has her way, than yes.

Finishing third four years ago in qualifiers made the now 22-year-old recommit herself to the sport, moving herself into the U.S. champion ranks the past two years.

Though her U.S. Championship performance this year was widely criticized—and disappointing—Wagner can prove all the doubters wrong with a big Olympics performance.
