About a month ago the Northeast received its first major snowstorm of the year.  For me it was the first I ever experienced on Long Island as a homeowner.  Personally I was just glad the power didn’t go out.  However, I must admit the loud winds and sound of snow hitting the trees were a little scary.

What’s even more scary is all of the baggage that comes with a snowstorm:  the delays, power outages, missed work, injuries, and God Forbid hundreds of other things that can go awry.

But I’d like to try and focus on the positive.  As we embark on more snow this season let’s try to keep smiles on our faces with these five positives that can come out of the nasty snow…..

Alberta Canada has just cancelled over 141,000 speeding tickets between November 2009 and January 2011. Are they just being generous and realize that speed limits are bullshit? Not quite…

Edmonton Police Service officials have not disclosed the precise cause of inaccurate speed readings, but they admitted the automated ticketing machines generated at least twenty-six bogus readings. The problem was discovered when prosecutors examined a ticket claiming a vehicle was traveling at 143km/h (89 MPH) on Yellowhead Trail — along with every other vehicle on the road.

Although 141,729 tickets worth about $17 million were generated, only 102,700 worth $12.3 million have been paid. The profit is split between the city, the for-profit vendor, and the province which takes about 17 percent.

Despite the significant pricetag of paying back the fines, the Edmonton incident is far from the largest photo ticketing refund on record. In July 2003, a speed camera in Victoria, Australia accused motorist Vanessa Bridges’ 1975 Datsun 120Y of driving at 98 MPH, setting off a chain reaction of events that ultimately cost the state government A$26 million in refunds. Even after the thirty-year-old Datsun was tested and found to be capable of reaching speeds no greater than 73 MPH, police dug in their heels and insisted the photo enforcement system was accurate and that Bridges’ fine would stand. Intense publicity arising out of her case, however, forced an investigation into the cameras on the Western Ring Road. Independent testing showed faulty in-ground sensors and electromagnetic interference had been responsible for generating bogus speed readings. The government had no choice but to cancel 165,000 camera tickets.

Oh so I wasn’t speeding and your stupid camera was broken? Why yes, you do owe me $12 million douchebags. And I’ll take it in CASH please. Oh you mean I have to divide it up? Oh well, I’ll take it anyways.

I don’t know about you guys but I like the brunette Katya Virshilas much better than the blond.   Don’t worry we have both here.  Oh yeah, do you guys even know who she is?  Well she was born in Lithuania but she’s definitely Canadian.   Well only because she’s been there since the age of 13.

Other than that she’s a dancer and has made an appearance on Smallville!  How about that?  So we’ve got dancing and the WB.  I’ll take it.  Seriously I will.

I know the ’70s and ’80s produced some weird shit, but I can’t remember seeing many album covers crazier than this. Before Afro Samurai, there were these guys, threatening you to dance with weapons and the fact that the police were on their way. DANCE damnit!

I actually know what they’re talking about. Living in a college town, I’ve shown up at many parties that were clearly going to get shut down by police, it was just a matter of time, so you’d try to have as much fun as you could before they showed up. Just like these guys.

What do you call a streak who runs across a sporting match but isn’t actually naked? Is there a term for that? In any case, that’s who gets tackled and brutalized by police in this video, though I can’t place where it is.

The guy gets wailed on with a baton, which draws the ire of the soccer players nearby, and the entire thing turns into a giant riot with the police getting immediate justice for their overreaction to this fun-loving fan. Probably not the best way to go about it, but I guess it got the job done here.

We’ve all been to night clubs where there are tons of professional dancers there.  Sexy women are paid A.  Just to be there and B.  To get money out of men.   Usually they’re dressed in some pretty awesome gear and show plenty of skin.

Turns out the clubs in Russia have similar operations going on.  Only in Russia it seems that their breed of women is just a tad hotter than ours.  Call me crazy but I think they are.
