San Francisco Considers Banning Selling Pets…ALL OF THEM

What the hell? Yes, San Francisco is considering a ban of all sales of pets, except fish, if the Commission of Animal Control and Welfare votes yes on the measure tonight. Why the hell would they do this? Because you’re too immature, that’s why.

“People buy small animals all the time as an impulse buy, don’t know what they’re getting into, and the animals end up at the shelter and often are euthanized,” said commission Chairwoman Sally Stephens. “That’s what we’d like to stop.”

Pet shop owners aren’t too pleased to learn they would be fish shop owners instead:

“It’s terrible. A pet store that can’t sell pets? It’s ridiculous,” said John Chan, manager of Pet Central on Broadway, which has been in business 30 years. “We’d have to close.”

To be fair, this is only banning SELLING pets, not owning them or adopting them from shelters for free. But that’s how you get them psycho cats who murder you in your sleep. What? I’m not kidding. It happened to my friend’s neighbor’s cousin.

I live in SF and i’m all for this law. the local pet stores won’t “go out of business” because they don’t make any profit on the animals – they profit on the food, toys, furniture, shampoo, trimming, medicine, etc. all the good stores in SF that sell the decent quality food (no filler, no grain, no byproducts, top 3 ingredients all protein) already stopped selling animals a while ago.

the only places still selling animals are either the giant chains like petco, which have totally miserable little cages with 8 puppies dying for attention, or the tiny boutique pet stores with super high prices selling exclusively to the millionaires in Russian Hill and North Beach, and they sell purebred dogs that cost thousands of dollars and usually have genetic defects and were bred in puppy mills where they kill millions of animals a year who aren’t show-perfect.

everyone i know got their animals from animal services or the SFSPCA or one of the dozens of adoption agencies in the city, or even off craigslist. i don’t think anyone will really care about this except the managers of the crappy pet stores.
