Money defacing is perhaps the most economical style of risky individual expression – and is as equally unlawful as graffiti.

To this day I’m not 100% sure why defacing money is illegal.  OK from what I understand and have read, it’s illegal to deface money (or checks) for the purpose of having a benefit or gain.  Which means that you might alter a 5 dollar bill to make it a 10.  But what if you just want to make the money look silly and never plan on using it?

How is that illegal?  Eh, whatever.  I just know that with a little creativity, defacing can be pretty funny.  Just check out these examples
