The ESPY awards have always had a certain comedic tone that differentiate it a bit from other award shows.  Just the fact that sport is involved allows for a ton of creativity in both monologues and skits that occur.

I think it’s the fact that sports are in fact a very serious thing, and when you can finally relax and poke fun at them it becomes great material for jokes.  Over the years the ESPY’s has seen its fair share of funny moments.
