In no way was this type of humour commonplace in television sitcoms of that time. They were pointing out the racism and jingoism so prevalent amongst a certain segment of American society. The show talked about issues that were previously taboo on television ... not just racism and sexism but such issues as abortion and homosexuality as well. If only there were a show brave enough to do so now ... well, there is South Park. Most definitely, All in the Family was satire.
