The 5 Most Memorable Lip Synching Scandals of All Time (With Video)

Yang Peiyi and Lin Miaoke
1. In a last-minute move demanded by one of China’s highest officials, the two were put together for the Olympic opening ceremony, with one lip-synching “Ode to the Motherland” over the other’s singing.
The real singer, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, with her chubby face and crooked baby teeth, wasn’t good-looking enough for the ceremony, chief music director Chen Qigang told state-owned Beijing Radio.
Man that’s harsh.
In honor of this latest Olympic scandal I’ve decided to enlighten you all and more importantly myself into some of the best lip-synching scandals the world has ever seen. This Olympic one certainly qualifies as the first.
It’s become pretty evident that Lip-synching is way more common these days than it’s ever been. Most pop stars have done it at some point or another and they will continue to do so. It’s expected when they are recording and it’s normal if they are changing costumes, dancing, etc etc.
But when news first leaked about some of these situations, the publicity was pretty huge.
Ashlee Simpson SNL Disaster
Oh you guys remember this one! Man this was funny. In 2007, Simpson was announced by Jude Law (the host). The beginning of the song was a bit rocky (just drums and some other random stuff), then magically Ashlee’s voice starts coming out of the speakers and she was singing the song she had already performed.
Milli Vanilli - July 21, 1989
This is a video of them really singing - ouch
The one that started it all. The dreadlocked duo was performing their biggest hit, ‘Girl You Know It’s True,’ at a show in Bristol, CT when the vocal track started to skip.
Britney Spears in her return at the MTV Video Music Awards
Everyone was waiting to see the new and improved Spears at this event. Ladies and gentlemen, she was not really improved. Though I did like the sluttiness.
Paul Abdul - Pick one, any one

It started in the early 90’s when Adbul was performing live and it was evident that back up tracks were playing at the same time. Since then, she’s been accused repeatedly. But back then it was pretty big news.
Abdul says: “It’s pretty funny to me. In the past, whenever I was accused of lip-synching I would purposefully hit bad notes so that people would know I was singing live! “But at the Super Bowl, they won’t let you sing live for technical reasons.
I was singing live over the backing track and I put a whole dance production together. People were waiting for a disaster but I nailed it.”

Remember that hot chick in the video who sung the chorus? Wrong. It was a fat chick.
Pavaratti Lip Synched his last performance
In his defense, he was sick and the event was extremely cold (2006 Olympics)

Don’t get me wrong here, I hate Ashley Simpson as much as the rest of the world. But when these singers go live they have a backing track to fatten up the sound at the live venue. Most of the time they do actually sing live but the record company wants them to sound as much like the studio performance as possible, so they have the backing track. Simpson’s situation is where someone was asleep at the switch and the band was able to roll with it and started playing the song they already played. Simpson on the other hand couldn’t cope.
Eh? No Miley Cyrus??
